Grace the Intern

Grace the Intern

Me and Cooper (click here for outtakes).

Hi! My name is Grace and I’m currently interning at AHA. I am a senior in high school, taking a class called Senior Experience which allows me to work in the AHA office during the school day — how cool is that?

AHA Association means a lot to me.  As a teenager with Asperger Syndrome, I found comfort in the idea that I wasn’t alone and I can overcome many of the problems I face on the spectrum — which I did!

A few years ago, I had trouble reading social cues and detecting humor or sarcasm. I rarely made eye contact and struggled making friends. Now, after receiving valuable resources from AHA and speaking at the organization’s 2009 Fall Conference, most people can’t even tell I’m on the spectrum.

I aspire to help other teens with similar challenges to the ones I have with Aspergers, and even ones I don’t! And I thought, what better way to do that than to work for AHA? I believe in everything we stand for and you should too.

Enjoy the blog!

Pat Schissel here – AHA Exec Director. It is a pleasure to welcome Grace to the AHA offices. In her first week she has been busy learning new programs, getting more involved in our fall conference activities, our Nov 13th fundraiser ROCK ‘N’ BOWL (that is her pooch modeling the hat on the Registration page! and in all becoming very much a part of the workings of our office. She is also – as you will see, a very talented writer and so finally our BLOG will keep you more up to date on what is going on. We are most pleased to have her with us and intend to make this an excellent experience for her and for all of us.

  2. Welcome Grace! Heard you are doing a great job. I look forward to reading your blog. I also learned that the word blog comes from the word weblog just wanted to share that.
